Video SEO Tips – Avoiding the Duplicate Content Penalty

Video SEO Tips – Avoiding Duplicate Content Penalty

Did you know that Google will penalize your website if it has duplicate content?

Duplicate content is content that appears on the Internet in more than one place (URL). When there are multiple pieces of identical content on the Internet, it is difficult for search engines to decide which version is more relevant to a given search query.  (from https://moz.com/learn/seo/duplicate-content)

Search engines like Google and Bing don’t like duplicate content because:

  • they don’t know what copy of the content to include in their search index
  • they don’t know whether they should attribute link factors such as trust, authority, etc. to these links

You can fix duplicate content penalties by telling Google which copies of the content they should pay attention to. This process is called “canonicalization” and includes setting up a canonical url for each piece of duplicate content.

Since two URLs are being used and the page content is the same for both of them, Google thinks you have two pages with duplicate content.Canonical URLs are used to prevent this. When Google crawls the page, it will see the Canonical URL and this is what Google recognizes as the “official” URL of the page. (from http://info.corecommerce.com)
